WASPS
Wasps can be a nuisance especially during the late summer months when they like to come into the house, buzz around and frighten both children and adults.
The cold of the winter will kill all of them save the fertilized Queen who will go into hibernation until the weather warms up again in mid- April. Then she will start laying eggs which will turn into bothersome youngsters again.
Identification of these Household Pests
- These flying and creeping yellow and black banded young household pests with their narrow waists and measuring around1/2 inch long, often found in our kitchens, are the worker type foraging for any sweet foods in order to feed their queen and her growing family.
- Eventually the colony can number up to 3-5000 flying nuisances!
These insects are not only considered as pests but can also be regarded as beneficial creatures as they kill an enormous number of flies, caterpillars and other insects.
The Nest
The nest is a work of art and may be found glued onto the rafters in the attic, garden shed or maybe on one of the garden trees. It is is made from scraped wood mixed with saliva, the resulting material being paper-like and usually formed into a beautiful spherical shape containing combs of hexagonal cells.
The Sting
- Although This injury usually causes more anxiety than harm, the sting is painful and for some unfortunate people, who are very allergic to the venom, the toxins therein can cause anaphylactic shock which may, in rare instances, result in the person’s death.
- The best antidote to this sting is the prompt application of an anti-histamine cream or aerosol spray such as Wasp-Eze.
- In emergency and if anti-histamine is not available, apply some vinegar which will sooth the pain and reduce the swelling.
- The bee leaves its sting in the wound and dies but this pest can withdraw it to keep it at the ready to inflict its sting into the next bothersome human!
Pest Control for Wasps in the House
- If the presence of a nest is causing no direct problems, then it is best left well alone as all of the inhabitants excepting the hibernating Queen will die off in the cold Winter weather.
- If the presence of the nest is worrying you and you would like it destroyed, ALWAYS ask for professional advice or contact the Environmental Health Department in your area.
