How do I Wash a Throw Pillow ?
wash a throw pillow
A Phone Call between Jon, (a college student) and his Mother.
How do I wash my big, square throw pillow?
The pillow doesn't have a cover and I sleep on it every night and it is getting rather greasy.
Do I just put it in the wash with other clothes or how should I go about washing it?
Hi Jon!
You can wash a throw pillow but tell me, is it filled with feather or down or does it have a manmade filling?
Well, you are really meant to dry-clean feather and down pillows but you can try to wash yours at 40 degrees it fits into your washing machine.
The best way to dry your down or/and feather pillow is to lay it over a rack in the hot sunshine and as it dries, fluff it up and turn it over frequently.
Follow these instructions and you will end up having a wonderful fresh smelling pillow and will sleep well.
If there is no sunshine where you live, use a tumble dryer but keep fluffing the pillows up as they tumble dry.
If your pillow has a polyester or man-made filling, you usually need to anchor the filling before washing it in the washing machine and drying it in a tumble dryer.
If the filling is not anchored it can gather at one end of the pillow in a great uncomfortable lump!
It is easy to anchor the filling by using your needle and thread and stitching through the pillow fabric, the pillow filling and out the other side.
Make as many stiches as necessary at both ends of your pillow or at the four corners to hold the filling in place.
If necessary remove the stitches after the wash or leave them in until next time.
After you have washed and dried your pillow, do spend some money and buy yourself a pair of suitable big, square, pillow covers.
Although this will cost you a bit of money it will save you lots of time and bother.
Good luck with your studies!
