Ideally, teenagers need a bedroom to escape to, where they can chill out, relax, bring their friends and where they can study in peace.
The teen years can prove very difficult for both parents their offspring.
The swirling hormones of puberty may temporally turn the most calm, reasonable and well balanced child into an angry, rebellious and demanding monster.
Of course it is more than likely that within a few years a wonderful, thoughtful young adult will emerge.
This page will give you an opportunity to share bedroom decorating ideas, choose appropriate bedroom colors and agree to suitable closet organizers. An uncluttered, organized and peaceful den will help to ease them through these troubled years.
Declutter and Organize Teenager Bedrooms
- Choose your time well when you want to declutter and help to organize a teenagers room.
- Although you may already have an over-all plan in mind, let them feel in charge.
- Encourage your teen to sort out his/her clothes and shoes by taking them all out of the closet and making piles of only what is really wanted and fits at the present time.
- Put the unwanted clothes aside to take to a charity shop the next day.
- Take your son or daughter out to the shops and together buy an appropriate closet organizer. A modular closet organizer is a moveable item and will prove useful throughout many moves.
Bedroom Closet Organizers
- Once the closet is cleaned and organized move on to the other storage requirements.
- Do your research first in order to save time and be able to guide your teen to acceptable new storage furniture.
- There is an abundance of under-bed storage, chests of drawers and beautiful boxes of all shapes and sizes.
- Young adults will need a place for all their gadgets.
- Students will also need a large desk in order to do their homework in peace.
Bedroom Decorating Ideas and Bedroom Color Schemes
Again the main job is to talk to your teenagers and try and come to a decision that is acceptable to you all. Do if necessary remind your young person that the house belongs to you and that the decorating decision must be a joint one. There are many magazines and books in the shops and the libraries giving tips for decorating ideas. All shops selling paints have sample books and sample paints for you to take home. Study them together and have fun!
- Get ideas from looking at magazines, visit show-rooms, talk to decorators.
- Where possible, aim to let as much natural light into the room. Natural light is a good mood uplifter!
- So as not to obstruct the light, keep any furniture higher than the window sill, away from the windows .
- Hang a mirror on the wall to reflect the light. It can make the room look brighter and friendlier.
- Try to avoid using too dark colors. They can be difficult to paint over at a later date.
- Paint the ceiling white, or very light to reflect the light.
- Keep the wall decoration plain. This will show off an array of posters better.
- Avoid using fussy wallpaper.
- If the room is small, blend the wall colours with the floor and furniture colours.
- If you feel the room needs more colour, then use brighter colours for the accessories.
- Wooden or laminated flooring will not only reflect light, but is hardwearing, easy to keep clean and gives a certain warmth and homeliness to the room.
- Encourage your teenager to keep articles not in use, in cupboards.
- Encourage them to keep shelves looking decorative, organized and clean.
- If the room is small, try to use smaller versions of furniture or if necessary, use a just a few pieces of larger furniture, maybe pieces with multi functions, for example, sofa/bed or table/shelf/desk.
- Depending on the thickness and type of wall, you may be able to build some shelves into the wall, otherwise use, narrow shelving and furniture.
- To create room height in a small room, place a plant with hanging foliage on a high surface.
Take heart! A child is for life but children are teenagers only for a few years!! I hope you have lots of fun and laughter together.
