Solutions for Sweat Stain Removal
Sweat Stain Removal
The sweat stain on the underarms of your shirt, dress or blouse is caused by the ingredients of the deodorant or anti-perspirant mixing with your sweat.
This mixture of deodorant and sweat does its job by causing the sweat pores in your skin to block up and so diminish your perspiration, but unfortunately it can leave a stubborn stain.
Good Advice before trying the Sweat Stain Removal Treatment
- Before using any of the following methods to remove the stain, always read the washing/cleaning instructions on the fabric label.
- Remember to test the treatment on a small hidden section of the material and if in any doubt, seek independent professional advice.
- Check colour fastness and dye stability before treatments.
- Avoid using enzyme-based detergents and stain removers on wool and silk fabrics.
- Never put a stained article into a hot wash or use hot dryer on it. The stain will set making it extremely difficult to remove.
- The sooner you treat the stain, the easier it will come out.
Methods for Removing Sweat Stains if the garment is NOT washable
Sorry! On this occasion the easiest and probably only solution is to send the article to the dry-cleaners!
Methods for Removing Sweat Stains if the garment is Washable
- Use Vanish or Oxi-Clean or similar products. This enzyme based soap is especially formulated for effective stain removal from most fabrics.
- Read the instructions for use carefully.
- Wet the stain with cold water.
- Apply the stain removal soap.
- Rub the detergent in gently, being careful not to damage the fibres of the garment.
- Wash as usual.
Two Old Fashioned and Time Tested Methods.
- Wipe the stained area using a sponge soaked in one part spirit/white vinegar (not malt vinegar) to one part warm water. This should soften the stain.
- If the stain did not soften, leave the stained area to soak for a couple of hours in the solution.
- Now wash the article immediately.
OR
- Mix some baking powder with water to make a paste.
- Spread the paste on the stain.
- Allow the stain + the paste to dry before washing the garment in a warm wash.
