Let's do Small Room Decorating
Small room decorating requires a special artisic flair. Every detail becomes important.
Here is a simple list of some basic rules to decorating a little room. These same rules apply to decorating a small dining room, living room, bathroom, kitchen or any other small room in your house.
21 Small Room Decorating Ideas
- Firstly and most importantly clear out and
recycle
all your clutter and organize the things you want to keep.
- Get ideas from looking at magazines, visit show-rooms, talk to decorators.
- Where possible, aim to let as much natural light into the room.
- Make sure the windows are clean and the curtains can be drawn right back or the blinds pulled right up or back thus retaining all the light possible.
- If you do not have a window, think about putting in a glazed door or a light tube.
- So as not to obstruct the light, keep any furniture higher than the window sill, away from the windows .
- Hang a mirror on the wall to reflect the light. It can make the room look bigger.
- Use lamps or recessed lighting.
- If necessary, fit a glazed door between your small room and an adjoining room.
- Keep the decorations of an adjoining room complimentary or similar to the small room.
- Paint the ceiling white, or very light to reflect the light.
- Keep the wall decoration plain. Use light, cool colours. Use shades of one colour. Try not to use dark paints or fussy wallpaper.
- Blend the wall colours with the floor and furniture colours.
- If you feel the room needs more colour, then use brighter colours for the accessories.
- Wooden or laminated flooring will not only reflect light, but is hardwearing, easy to keep clean and gives a certain warmth and homeliness to the room.
- Where possible, keep articles not in use, in cupboards.
- Keep shelves looking decorative, organized and clean.
- Make sure any pictures compliment the decor.
- Try to use the smaller versions of furniture or if necessary, use a just a few pieces of larger furniture, maybe pieces with multi functions, for example, sofa/bed or table/shelf/desk.
- Depending on the thickness and type of wall, you may be able to build some shelves into the wall, otherwise use, narrow shelving and furniture.
- To create room height, place a plant with hanging foliage on a high surface.
