SILVERFISH

Silverfish photo courtesy of Sebastian Stabinger
This silver-grey colored creature is not a fish but a very primitive insect!
It is often seen scurrying around in damp places such as the bathroom, toilet, kitchen or cellar. Its 7mm long (1/4inch) cigar shaped body has 3 bristles at the rear and it is unable to fly. If disturbed, often with a light being switched on, it runs away to hide. It poses no threat to humans but may nibble at paper and other starchy treats such as wall paper glue!
The Life Cycle
- Eggs are laid cracks and crevises
- The eggs hatch in three to four weeks
- The tiny whitish nymphs emerge
- These nymphs mature in a series of moults
- The mature adult lives for over three years if its choice of home is warm and damp!
- Mating occurs and the cycle starts again.
The Control Measures for Household Pests.
- Check for unexpected damp areas.
Is there any hidden rising damp?
Is there a slightly leaking pipe in the vicinity?
Does condensation need to be better controlled?
- If you do not find any reasons for these harmless insects finding a home in your premises and you still want to get rid of them, you may use a specific insecticidal powder or aerosol and treat the areas where they occur.
- You may be able to buy non-harming, kindly traps so you can return this harmless creature into the garden.
