REMOVING WATER STAINS
house cleaning
Removing water stains needs care and patience. It is interesting to note that water does not usually deposit a residue to cause a stain and, the individual fibres are not stained but are only in a deformed state and appear stained!
Sometimes the force of the water, such as rain, unfixes the dye or finishing agents in the fabric and encourages these to migrate and cause the ring seen in water spots.
If the garment or material is washable and will not shrink, then it is possible to remove the spots by immersing the whole garment in water or steaming the damaged area in order to return the uniformity of the fibres.
If the fabric is not washable then other methods need to be employed or the garment must to be taken to a professional cleaners.
Getting Rid of Water Stains by Using a Steamer
If the material is washable and you have a clothes steamer, steam the article and if appropriate, iron it whilst moist.
Attempting Removing Water Stains through Soaking
- If the article is washable then prepare to soak the whole item in a bath of ½ cup of salt to 1 gallon of slightly warm water.
- Using too hot water may make the stain more difficult to remove.
- Make absolutely sure that every area is completely submerged in the solution.
- It may take 12-24 hours for the stains to vanish but once they have, rinse the article in warm water and allow it to dry naturally.
If your water stained item is precious, then seek advice from a professional dry cleaning establishment. It is sometimes really difficult to remove these stains which are not really stains but often pose more of a removal problem than a food stain!
