Removing Mustard Stain
Removing mustard stain.
Mustard contains turmeric, a yellow dye which bonds very well to textiles, especially cotton.
If these stains are not treated immediately, they can be impossible to remove but it is definitely worth having a go.
Remember to test the treatments on an unseen patch of fabric.
Follow these steps to remove mustard stains from the fabrics recommended for home laundering.
Firstly, if the mustard stain is old, use a blunt knife, to scrape off as much of the spill as possible being careful not to rub the mustard deeper into the fibres. Shake away all the scrapings so they do not land on the material and produce a new stain.
Then follow the instructions as if the stain has just occurred. Do try some or all the following methods.
- Treat the stain as quickly as possible with a commercial pre-treating solution. Two of the more popular are Biz and Axion.
- Soak the stain with clear heavy-duty liquid detergent or full strength clear liquid detergent for around 15 minutes and then rinse thoroughly.
- If the fabric is white, soak the stain in a dilute solution of all-fabric or oxygen bleach like OxiClean for 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly.
- Mix ¼ tsp. of dish soap and ¼ teaspoon of white vinegar and ¼ cup of warm water in a small bowl and soak the stain for 15minutes. Rinse thoroughly.
- If the mustard stain is persistent, soak it for several hours or overnight in a warm solution of detergent and water. Rinse thoroughly.
- Finally follow your normal laundering routine but do not dry the garment if the stain remains but repeat the above steps until stain is removed.
If the garment is not washable ask for advice at your local dry cleaners.
GOOD LUCK
