PILLOWS: Here’s help to choose the right one for you!
Did you know that when pillows need renewing, it’s no longer the done thing to buy just any old one!? There are different types for people who sleep on their backs, others for those who sleep on their sides, and even others for front sleepers!
It is difficult to know, if the one you buy is going to be comfortable, and the sorry fact is, that most shops will not give you a refund if your purchase turns out to be uncomfortable.
In order to sleep comfortably and feel rested, it should support your neck, head and upper spine.
Most ones are of similar size, but made from differing materials, thus giving various densities and offering varying types of support.
Down Filling
Down are the soft feathers found under the main feathers of birds. They are usually obtained from geese or ducks. In the “olden days” the down from the eider duck was used in the making of the old duvets called eiderdowns! A down filling is soft and warm and feels luxurious but is rather expensive. It may require professional cleaning but on a hot and sunny day I have put mine into a wool wash and placed it in the sun to dry, shaking the feathers every now and again! For allergy sufferers it is possible to buy hypoallergenic types filled with specially cleaned goose down.
Feather and Down Filling
The majority of feather filled have a proportion of down in them. This filling is still breathable and lightweight is a good compromise between quality and affordability.
Cotton Filling
It is possible to buy cotton filled ones. These may be useful for people with certain allergies as they normally contain no synthetics or chemicals and cotton is naturally hypoallergenic.
Hollowfibre Polyester Filling
This type of filling is usually washable, non-allergic and less expensive than the traditional down filling.
Tempura Memory Foam
Although this type seem dense, the foam adapts to the shape of the body thus supporting both head and neck in their most natural and neutral positions, providing a healthy sleeping posture.
There are V shaped and contour shaped pillows, orthopaedic neck support, anti-bacterial, anti-dustmite, anti-microbial and anti-allergenic and many more types!
Suitable Pillows for your different Sleeping Positions
- Side sleepers probably require the most support. It must support the head and neck keeping the spine in a natural position. Note that if it is too high it will tilt the head and shoulders upward from the spine causing discomfort, neck pain, headaches.
- If you sleep on your back most of the time you should look for a pillow that is reasonably firm and so supporting the head, and the natural curve of the spine between the head and shoulders.
- If you tend to sleep on your stomach your ideal type will be one that is pretty soft and flat allowing the head to be lifted high enough off the mattress to stay in line with the spine.
Finally and probably, a large part of what makes a good pillow is personal preference. If it feels comfortable, it is likely to encourage relaxation and promote sound sleep.
I do hope your new pillows will promote a deep and restful sleep. Do check out my other informative web pages!
