Before we start to kill any animals, even though they are named as pests rather than pets, we need to use all sensible methods to stop household pests from entering the house in the first place.
Some creatures are really only seasonal visitors so use fly screens where and when flying insects such as house flies, mosquitoes and wasps are looking for cooler temperatures or food. Cover or put away all food stuffs. Make sure crumbs are removed from surfaces and floors.
Crawling creatures will find open doors, windows or cracks around broken bricks or tiles an easy entrance.
Do not encourage rats and mice by leaving scraps of food for the birds on the ground. If you feed the garden birds use a bird tables or feeder baskets.

The treatments may be in the form or a powder, a spray, an aerosol, puffer pack, some bait or insecticidal smoke.
Some flying pests such as house flies, mosquitoes or wasps can be got rid of easily with the use of a spray or by squatting.
Others, often crawlers, who have longer life cycles, emerging from eggs or pupae, may need treatment which remains effective for up to six weeks or longer.
Some pest problems such as mice or rats can be eradicated in your house but there may be a source of re-infestation arising from nearby premises. In this case the best remedy is for a well trained pest controller to visit regularly.
If in doubt, always ask for advice from your Local Authority Environmental Health Department. They have many information leaflets and will even send out one of their professional pest controllers to assess the situation, and where necessary, will also deal with the infestation.
