mould mould mould
Mould on Nectarines---Mold Bread---Mouldy Strawberries
(See attributes end of page)

Mould or mold? One is the English spelling and one the American, and both are the group name of same most annoying, frustrating and totally uninvited tiny fungi to invade our lovely homes, whether we live in Britian, America or most of the rest of the world.

Do also read my page about mold, spelt M-O-L-D as it will tell you all about the causes and how to rectify the problem.

Eliminate water from the surfaces of your homes and spores will not germinate.

Life Story of this Household Pest!

  • The air is full of microscopic spores.
  • When these spores land on moist surfaces containing suitable food sources, they germinate.
  • Some of these germinating spores are seen as green, pink or black stains.
  • Mature spores are released into the air to start the process again.

  • Wipe down affected surfaces with fungicidal preparations to remove existing growth.
  • Check for rising damp. If rising damp is present, employ qualified contractors offering a 30 year guarantee, to install a suitable damp proofing system.
  • Check for faulty plumbing or drainage problems. If faults are found, get them fixed.
  • Keep gutters cleaned out and keep downpipes, drains and brick work in good condition.
  • Is your new home not yet fully dried out? Apply mouldicidal paints where necessary. Plenty of ventilation and adequate heating should dry it out in time. If the problem persists, ask the builders.
  • Is the mould only appearing on a cold, north facing wall? If so, consider cavity insulation, wall tiles or rendering.
  • Are the walls damp from condensation? Read below!

Condensation

When warm, moist air touches a cold surface, the invisible water vapour in the air condenses into droplets of water covering the cold surface.

The reasons for condensation depend on,

  • The thermal efficiency of the building’s construction.
  • The living patterns and habits of the occupants.
  • The effectiveness of the heating and ventilation.
  • The humidity of the climate.

With our modern super-duper double glazing instead of draughty windows, and our lovely toasty radiators instead of draughty fires and chimneys, the ventilation in our houses, especially in the winter is often minimal.

Many of us are at work all day and do not heat the houses during this time, the inside walls never really warm up.

We boil a kettle, cook foods, wash up, dry clothes, have baths and showers. The warm, moist air condenses onto the cold surfaces of the walls and ceilings and the fungi get a good long cool drink and get on with their life cycles!!

What can we do?

  • Keep the house warmer by insulating the walls and roof spaces. See insulating your loft
  • If you have solid house walls, dry-line the problem walls of the affected rooms.
  • Run the central heating on low for longer periods of the day, rather than high for short periods.
  • Have tickle vents fixed to the double glazed windows. See Energy Efficient Windows
  • Air the bathroom after use
  • Dry the washing outside when possible and use the tumble dryer if necessary. See Energy Efficient Washer and Dryer
  • Leave the ventilation grills open in the chimneys and in the kitchen.

Keep vigilant for any hint of this bothersome fungus and treat it immediately, investigate the cause, and rectify the situation.

GOOD LUCK
