Mold (mould) is a fungi and like most living things requires food and water to grow.
The germinating spores of this fungi need nourishment and this is provided by paint, some paint thickeners, cellulose or even dust on the house walls.
Black Mould
The green, black or pink stains produced by mould are a great source of irritation and appear on wall paper, plaster and painted surfaces.
Not only is this unsightly it can also cause health problems for susceptible adults and children.
The air is full of microscopic mould spores.
When spores land on moist surfaces containing suitable food sources they germinate and become household pests.
Mature spores are released into the air to start the process again.
Eliminate water from the surfaces of your homes and spores will not germinate.
How to Eliminate Water from the Surfaces of your Homes
Rising Damp and Faulty Plumbing
Wipe down affected surfaces with fungicidal preparations to remove existing growth.
Check for rising damp. If rising damp is present, employ qualified contractors offering a 30 year guarantee, to install a suitable damp proofing system.
Check for faulty plumbing or drainage problems. If faults are found, get them fixed.
Keep gutters cleaned out and keep downpipes, drains and brick work in good condition.
Is your new home not yet fully dried out? Apply moldicidal paints where necessary. Plenty of ventilation and adequate heating should dry it out in time. If the problem persists, ask the builders.
Is this problem only appearing on a cold, north facing wall? If so, consider wall tiles or rendering.
Are the walls damp from condensation? Read below!
Condensation
When warm, moist air touches a cold surface, the invisible water vapour in the air condenses into droplets of water making the cold surface damp encouraging mold to form.

The reasons for condensation depend on,
The thermal efficiency of the building’s construction.
The living patterns and habits of the occupants.
The effectiveness of the heating and ventilation.
The humidity of the climate.
With our modern super-duper double glazing instead of draughty windows, and our lovely toasty radiators instead of draughty fires and chimneys, the ventilation in our houses, especially in the winter is often minimal.
Many of us are at work all day and do not heat the houses during this time. The inside walls never really warm up.
We boil a kettle, cook foods, wash up, dry clothes, have baths and showers. The warm, moist air condenses onto the cold surfaces of the walls and ceilings and the fungi get a good long cool drink and get on with their life cycles!!
