To make your own detergent you will need to try one of the many recipes given on the internet. Most of them require you to buy various ingredients and blend them together. Some of the articles demonstrate, through the use of a video, the step by step method of making your own laundry detergent.


Some people apparently have been making it for years using soap flakes or grated soap of their own choice, borax and washing soda. Vinegar and be put into the soap dispenser to reduce suds or as a water softener or as a rinsing aid. Glycerine is sometimes added too.

Possible advantages of making your own soap detergent

Possible disadvantages of making your own Laundry Detergent

  • The mix contains no surfactant which prevents excessive suds.
  • There may be problems with scum.
  • Soap does no always rinse out well.
  • Some fabrics which are meant to be absorbent loose, such as diapers, loose some absorbency.
  • White fabrics may become dingy.
  • Stains may be reluctant to leave the fabric.
  • This type of detergent may reduce the life of clothing
  • Some mixtures may become chunky and have known to block up hoses making the machine leak.

  • They want to be independent from the commercial detergent manufacturers.
  • They or their families are allergic to commercial detergents
  • It is a way to save on household bills.
