LOFT STORAGE SOLUTIONS

loft storage solutions

Don't rush to buy, but just take heed,
Consider the storage space you'll need.

Shelving, bags and vacuum packs,
Cases, boxes and large sacks.

When storing things in the loft remember the extra weight that you are loading on the joists.
Temperatures in the loft can vary from, perhaps below freezing in the winter to ferociously hot in the summer.

Always seek professional advice about strength of the joists and the extra storage and for pest control if necessary

Depending on the condition of the roof, dust could be blown in and sometimes household pests such as moths, birds, bats or wasps could make it their home there.
Naturally the loft tends to be a cosy home for spiders too!

Make sure the loft is well lit and that you walk only on the loft boarding. Walking on the joists can be very dangerous.

Free-Standing Shelves for your loft Storage Solutions

Free standing shelves are likely to need assembling in the loft space.
All free standing shelving must be stood safely on the loft boarding.

Plastic shelving is light and strong but the shelves may sag in time.
It is usually bought ready to just slot together.
  • Wooden shelving is stronger but heavier than plastic.
    It can be self assembled.
The unit may have a narrow base making it less stable.
  • Metal shelving can be light-weight and strong and is available with a wide or narrow base.
If the loft is at all damp, it may rust over time.

Fitted Shelves for your Loft Storage Solutions

In a modern trussed roof, shelving can be fitted into the truss V shape.
Shelves can also be screwed to walls where suitable.,br> When in doubt, ask for professional advice.

Vacuum Storage Bags and Storage Boxes

REMEMBER TO LABEL ALL ITEMS STORED IN BAGS AND BOXES!

The cheapest bags for storing are your bin bags tied at the top with string but there is now a good choice of storage bags in the shops.
Vacuum sealed bags are for long term storage. These are often made from transparent material and have watertight zips enabling you to vacuum out any air.
Nylon bags of all shapes and sizes guarantee to keep out moisture, bugs and dirt!
The cheapest boxes are of the cardboard variety obtained by asking shopkeepers for their empty ones. Transparent plastic storage boxes come in all shapes and sizes. Remember that they have to fit through your loft hatch!
Suitcases can be used for both storage and travel.
Canvas wardrobes are light-weight and may have their uses.
