LIVING ROOM COLORS
living room colors - decorating a room - paint colors
We all strive to make our living room colors radiate a feeling of comfort and reflect our sense of style.
There are so many different ways of using color when you decorate a room.
Naturally if you have a busy family-house, you will have to decorate in a different way than if just one or two people are in residence, when the possibility of an elegant room may become a reality.
Color is the most important element of the room scheme and often presents the biggest problem.
Look around your living room and see the colors you like and the ones that maybe look too drab or too bright or just wrong.
Painting a Living Room
- Think about the different areas you hope to paint, and the different areas where you plan to introduce contrasting or harmonizing colors.
- Take your time to assemble any items with the colors you like and cut out colors from magazines and books, acquire color wheels and charts and find items of lovely hues from anywhere you can think of.
- Play around with this assortment, choose one or two colors and see what combinations appeal to you. Remember that a color, painted or displayed on a large areas may look better a few shades lighter.
Here are a few hints for choosing living room colors:-
Hints from Designers and Decorators
- Light ceiling colors will make a room seem higher whilst using a darker color on the ceiling and bringing it down as far as the picture rail will make a high ceiling feel lower.
Sloping ceilings in an attic room are best painted the same walls.
- Cold colors are associated with blues and blue- greys while warm colors are associated with magenta, a purple-red color.
- A base color is the one you will probably choose for your walls.
- Accent colors are the highlights colors, for example, cushions, candles, throws, that is, any color that lifts the base color.
- Contrasting colors are ones that come from a different color palette or color family and makes an impact.
- A dominant color is the one that stands out from the rest. It could be the one used for the greatest proportion of the room but could also be the one that stands out from the rest.
To Decorate a Living Room
An easy way, and one you cannot really go wrong with, is to decorate your living room wall with a base color of one from the Natural palette.
The Natural palette include all the whites whether tinged with blue, pink, yellow or grey.
White by itself, can be rather stark but the Naturals will pick up the shades of the colors placed near them.
Adding, hard and soft textures, textiles whether using fabrics, rugs, cushions and flooring in the Naturals, will add an entirely new dimension and will help create a peaceful and simple aura.
A few splashes of accent colors in beautiful pieces of favourite items or arranged flowers will complete the picture.
- Would you like a room that looks light and airy in the daytime and transformed by subdued lighting in the evening, to give your room a warm atmospheric feel?
- This style suits many families and it is achieved by using very light pastel colors with small amounts of earthy shades and islands of darker shades.
- Small or close-patterns on fabrics, rugs and carpets will show less dirt than fabrics with solid color and darker shades will make the room feel more intimate.
