• If you living room doubles as your dining room, think about a suitable floor covering.
• If you have children or messy eaters, you may decide to have easily cleaned wooden or laminate flooring with rugs scattered for added comfort but always consider the extra noise of walking shoes on uncarpeted flooring. It could be an annoyance for the inhabitants of upstairs, downstairs or next door.
• If you must cater for family mealtimes then, if there is room, a permanent table is usually necessary. An extending rectangular table may be appropriate or a circular one that extends into an oval. A round table is sociable, good for family conversations and their curved nature creates a safer, more welcoming and homely feeling.
• If the family is small or you live on your own, a table that folds down and also serves a shelf may be just right for you.

Do you watch the television in your living room?

• If you have a television in your living room, try not to let it dominate the space.
• Some TVs can be hidden inside a storage cabinet, cleverly incorporated into the library book shelves or if portable, kept on a trolley and wheeled in for viewing.
• In order to lessen the impact of a TV in the living room, arrange the seating in a way that no one is left staring at a blank screen!
• Have head-phones available for when one person wants to watch the teli whilst the others want to talk or just relax.
