Before choosing kitchen curtains, consider the style, design and color scheme of your present or even future kitchen. Consider the overall decorating plan for the whole of the area.
Kitchen window curtains can act as a decorative accessory so take your time when choosing beautiful colors, patterns and fabrics. Sometimes curtains can blend in to the color scheme or provide a splash of color to the kitchen.
Tips for Designing Beautiful Kitchens
To encourage harmony in the kitchen,
- choose your curtains with great care to compliment your kitchen design.
- keep the kitchen bright, clean and dry.
- use off-whites, cream or shades of yellow for back-ground colors and maybe shades of blue, green or purple for small areas and accessories.
- do not allow any area to get cluttered.
- have well arranged storage spaces.
- open the windows to air the room at least once every day
- place green leafy plants on the window cill.
- have natural wood flooring and cabinets where possible.
- work surfaces made from natural materials, for example marble.
Ready made Curtains or Custom Made Curtains and Budgets
- What is your budget?
- What is the color theme of your kitchen?
For large windows vertical stripes may bring vitality into the room, whilst for small windows, curtains with smaller patterns or bold colors may be more suitable.
- Do you want only machine washable curtains ones for dry-cleaning-only?
- Do you want ready-made or custom-made curtains?
Your new curtains may need alterations. Will this affect your budget?
- Are accessories available to match the curtains?
- If your windows are on the sunny side of the house and you wish to avoid glare and sun damage to your material,
Colors for Kitchen Drapes
- Choosing off-white, cream or pale yellow as the background color of your kitchen gives an impression of cleanliness, efficiency and brightness.
- The introduction of dark or bright greens, blues or touches of purple are a suggestion for decorative finishes or accessories, (so maybe the motifs or patterns in your curtains). These brighter splashes of color, in well chosen shades, will introduce a feeling of harmony and energy to the kitchen atmosphere.
- Images of fruit and vegetables in harmonious colors also lend themselves to motifs on tiles, fabrics or small areas of wall-paper.
Fabrics for Kitchen Curtains
- If your window is above the sink, then be sure to fit curtains that will not be damaged if splashed with water.
- If you have plants on the window cill, make sure the curtains are not too heavy. They may cause damage to delicate leaves or flowers.
- Cotton curtains are a good choice as they are the easy to wash and iron and come in a great variety of colors. Gingham curtains have always been fashionable for small kitchen windows.
- If you have a kitchen door leading to the outside or other large expanses of glass, you may wish to choose a heavier fabric for your curtains but take time to co-ordinate all types and sizes of curtains in a favorable way.

Washing your Windows
Before buying your kitchen window curtains
- Measure the size of each window. The correct width of required material is arrived at by adding the width of the window plus half the width again. Many curtains are sold in standard lengths and widths.
- Decide whether to have net curtains for added day-time privacy.
- What size pole or curtain track do you require? Do you want your curtains to pull right away from the window, letting in as much light as possible?
Lots of choices so take your time and choose wisely
