You will need to plan your organizer design by counting the number of clothes that need to be hung up, the number of sweaters that can be folded for storage, the amount of room your shoes need and how much and what sort of storage the rest of your belonging require.
Measure the size of your closet space. Work out the depth and length of shelves and the size of baskets and cubbies you need. These planned measurements are often overlooked but it is very annoying if your folded items do not fit easily into the wire baskets and your shoes are too big for the shelves or cubbies. If you are planning to store small items, remember to choose any wire baskets with small gauge mesh.

Here are some suggestions about where to go to buy
inexpensive closet organizers.

Canvas Organizers, Wire Closets or MDF

  • Choose MDF, wire or canvas. MDF is stronger than chip board. It will last for a good time but can get tatty if taken apart and moved from house to house.
  • Metal organizers in chrome, nickel or epoxy covered steel, are strong, sturdy and long lasting and will co-ordinate with other pieces of furniture. They are easy to dissemble and transport if and when necessary.
  • Canvas organizers are more of a temporary furniture piece but very useful if you are on the move a lot. They are relatively cheap and can easily be taken apart, folded and packed into the boot of a car.

Accessories are available with all these types of organizers. Prices will vary.

Check out the demonstration systems. Do the hangers slide well and can they be removed easily? Check the drawers. Do they push in and pull out with ease? Remember cheapness does not mean shoddy!
