The Ideal Freezer Temperature

Custom Search
The ideal freezer temperature (or proper freezer temperature)in which the frozen foods should be kept is -18° C (-4°F).

Where to Position your Freezer.

The best place in the home for a freezer is near to the kitchen, in a well ventilated room within a temperature range of 10-15 °C (50-60°F) and away from direct sunlight. Do read your freezer guarantee manual for information about the correct location for your freezer.

Freezer Temperature Alarms and Freezer Thermometers

  • To keep a check on the temperature in the freezer, it is necessary to have a thermometer with markings for low temperatures.
  • Place the thermometer between two frozen foods and glance at the reading every time you open the freezer. In this way you will be aware of any worrying fluctuations in the temperature and will be quick to notify an engineer if your appliance needs repairing.
  • Before calling an engineer and if the temperature in the freezer is rising, check the door seal to see if it is damaged and look to see if your freezer needs defrosting. If nothing is amiss call the engineer.
  • You can also purchase a freezer alarm that lets you know when the temperature in your freezer is rising beyond the recommended temperature and your food is in danger of defrosting.

The Best Way to Freeze Food.

  • Do not overload the freezer with big batches of unfrozen goods. Freezing up to 2-3 pounds of food from room temperature is ideal.
  • Set the freezer temperature control lower at -23°C (-10̊ F) for about 24 hours in advance. This will enable a rapid freezing of the food and will not damage the food already stored in the freezer.
  • Place the packed and sealed food to be frozen, in contact with the surfaces in the coldest part of the freezer.
  • Leave a space between the sealed packages so that the cold air can circulate freely around the cooling packages.
  • When the newly added food is frozen, return the temperature control to its former position and pack the new frozen foods closely together.
