How to remove rust stains.
If the rust mark is on fabric, remember that hot air will set this stain, so do not tumble dry the article before removing the stain.
If the rust stain is newly acquired and has not penetrated the fabric, then try washing the garment in the normal way and maybe you will be lucky and the stain will disappear.
There are various ideas on how to remove rust stains from fabrics.
Try some old fashioned tried and tested ideas.
If you are going to use these methods, please do a test on an unseen area of the garment before treating.
Lemon juice has bleaching powers. Always wash the garment after treatments.
- Drip lemon juice or white vinegar on the stain and, if you are lucky enough to have some hot sunshine, leave the fabric in the sun to dry.
- Cover the stain with salt. Rinse it off and then drip some lemon juice over the stain. Leave it for 1 hour and wash the article.
- Boil some rhubarb stalks in water. Remove the stalks. Let the rhubarb water cool a bit and immerse the stain and watch until hopefully the stain fades.
- Wet the stained area and dab it with cream of tartar. You may find this in your kitchen storage cupboard.
- Rub the stain with salt and lemon. Let it soak for up to 24hrs. and put it in the sun for a while before laundering it.
- Apply a mixture of 1/4 teaspoon mild liquid dish soap in one cup warm water. Saturate the area for at least 5mins.
- Rub the stain gently with pumice stone but this could damage delicate fabrics!
