HOW TO REMOVE INK STAINS
how to remove ink stains - stain removal
When considering removing ink stains, always do a test-run treatment on another piece of the same fabric where it does not show.
Branded stain removal products such as Stain Devil, Supersoap, Amodex, Vanish or other commercial brand may be successful for removing the ink stain.
Before using any of the following methods showing how to remove ink stains, always read the washing/cleaning instructions on the fabric label.
- Remember to test the treatment on a small hidden section of the material.
- If in any doubt, seek independent professional advice .
- The sooner you treat the stain, the easier it will come out.
- Check colour fastness and dye stability before treatments.
- Avoid using enzyme-based detergents and stain removers on wool and silk fabrics.
- Never put an article stained with ink into a hot wash or use hot dryer on it as the stain will set making it extremely difficult to remove.
WARNINGS before trying to remove ink stains.
- Ballpoint pens can cause a lot of trouble when they leak into pockets and on clothes. DO NOT try to wash the stain off with hot water as it will set the stain and make it much harder to remove it later.
- DO NOT dry the stain with hot air from a hand dryer, hair dryer or tumble drier. This too will set the stain.
- Avoid using enzyme-based detergents and stain removers on wool and silk fabrics.
Home Treatment Ideas for How to Remove Ink Stains from Fabrics
1. Place a pad made of absorbent towelling under the stain.
2. Work from the outside area of the stain towards the centre.
3. To stop the ink from spreading on white coloured fabric, put a few drops of hydrogen peroxide around the stain to make a barrier.
4. Dab ‘rubbing alcohol’ onto the stain and leave for a few minutes before rinsing thoroughly with tepid water. Blot off the resulting liquid with a clean cloth or tissue.
OR
5. Drop a bit of detergent, hand sanitizer, or liquid hand wash directly onto the stain and gently loosen the ink stain in cold water.
When you have finally removed the ink from your garment, either have the garment dry-cleaned or rinse it well in cool water and then put the item if suitable (check washing instructions) through a hot machine wash.
To remove Ink Stains from Carpets
- If the stain was on a carpet or on upholstery, follow the above instructions but, when you have been successful in removing the stain, and after your final and careful rinse, blot up as much as the wetness as possible.
- On a carpet, put an absorbent towel over the treated area and stand on the towel to squeeze as much moisture out as possible. Repeat as necessary.
- When the area is as dry as you can make it, allow the natural airflow to continue the total drying process.
