how to clean a cluttered and dirty closet

It is almost impossible to keep a cluttered closet clean and organized.
Before you start to sort out your closet, it would be helpful to take a photograph to remind you not to get into that unhappy situation again.

Here is how to put things right the easy way.

Ask yourself these following questions:

Declutter and Clean your Closet

  • Do I have too many clothes?
  • Have I enough hangers, drawers and shelves?
  • Am I trying to get too much squashed into my closet?
  • Must I consider a more satisfactory closet system whereby I can organize your clothes in such a way as to encourage tidiness?
  • Could I put some clothes into storage bags and only have what I need for the time of year in my closet?
  • Do I need to have a thorough sort out of my clothes? Could I sell some or recycle others?
  • When you have discovered the reasons for the cluttered and dirty closet, then it is time to sort it out and give it a good clean.

Here's How to Clean a Cluttered and Dirty Closet

If you have a large walk in closet, it would be wise to attack each area separately.
Arrange a space away from the closet on which to place the contents of your closet.
Empty the closet and vacuum it.
Arm yourself with a bucket containing water to which a little vinegar or detergent has been added.
Using a cloth dipped in the water mix, wash out the space, paying particular attention to the corners, the rods, the shelves and the drawers, both inside and out.

Whilst you are waiting for the area to dry, start sorting out the clothes, shoes and accessories and all the rest of the articles.

When your closet is clean and dry, start to return the clothes, constantly asking yourself if it fits and have I worn it during the last year or so.

Sort your things into various, suitable groups of articles :-

  • to store,
  • to sell
  • to take to clothes exchange party,
  • to donate to charity
  • to give to a friend.
  • to recycle.

And the rest you will be happy to return to the closet in an organized manner

When you return only the articles you really, really want, then your closet will look wonderful and just how you like it.

With the clutter gone and this storage space looking clean and beautiful, you will be encouraged to always keep it that way.

Now take a photograph of your great, tidy, clean closet and keep it nearby to remind you of your good intentions.
