- Before using any of the following methods for hair dye stain removal, always read the washing/cleaning instructions on the fabric label.
- Remember to test any treatment on a small hidden section of the material and if in any doubt, seek independent professional advice .
- Detergents with strong colours will stain lightly coloured clothes.
- Check the colour fastness and dye stability of the fabric before treatments.
- Avoid using enzyme-based detergents and stain removers on wool and silk fabrics.
- Never put a stained article into a hot wash or use hot dryer on it, as the stain will set, making it extremely difficult to remove later.

- The sooner you treat the stain, the easier it will come out.
Remember that colour-removing-solutions will remove the colour of the garment too.
Hair Dye Stain Removal from Dry-Clean Only Fabrics
If the garment is made from dry clean only fabric, blot off the surplus hair dye and take the garment to the dry cleaners immediately. Any home treatments may make it impossible for the dry cleaning to be effective.
Ideas for Hair Dye Stain Removal from Hard Surfaces
- Work quickly because a dried stain will be much more difficult to remove.
- With an absorbent tissue or cloth, soak up as much of the dye as possible.
- On hardwood floors try a hand cleaner such as GOJO or SWARFEGA
- On varnished floorboards, bathroom sealant or grouting, try placing tufts of cotton wool soaked in bleach over the stain and leaving it for a few hours.
- On bathroom cabinets try using ZUD applied with Q-tips.
- Rubbing alcohol can be used on tiled flooring or marble surfaces.
Ideas for Removing Hair Dye From Washable Fabrics
After any of these treatments wash the garment and check for cleanliness. Do not put clothes into the dryer until the stain is out. If the stain remains, repeat the treatment, try a different one or ask for professional advice.
