FLIES
Flies are loathsome household pests often found flying around or walking over food in our homes. Unfortunately each of these creatures can carry over 3000000 (3 million) bacteria on their body and legs!
Pests in the Home
- In the UK we have two common types, the Lesser House which is the smaller of the two and is the one that drives you crackers, as it flits around the lampshades and cruises around other hanging objects.
The larger of the two is the Common House type.
- These insects are most active in the hotter months of the year when they forage around and lay their eggs in the filth of dustbins, faecal material and rubbish tips. Here they will also pick up a variety of bacteria on their feet, body hairs and gut.
- These pests also feed on any foods left out in the house.
It is strange how we tolerate this filthy creature in our homes as they transmit a wide variety of gastro enteric illnesses.
Controlling and getting rid of the House Fly from the Home
Use of Insecticide
- Where these pests are a problem, fit screens especially in the kitchen to keep them out of the house.
- Scrupulous cleanliness and hygiene is vital thus depriving them of all feeding and egg-laying sites
- Dispose of all food residues, empty bottle and tins into a dustbin with a tight filling lid.
- Wash out the dustbin regularly and dust it with an insecticide in the summer months.
- Cover all foods with tight fitting lids.
- If these pests do get into the house, use a squat or specific aerosol spray to kill them. Do not spray anywhere near to children or food.
- Sticky hanging insecticidal papers do not look very nice but do the job of catching them (and often your hair!) very well.
Store all Pest Control Chemicals where Children cannot reach them.
It is important to get these household pests out of your kitchen and your house. It is a well known saying that if you followed a one for a day, you wouldn't want to eat for at least a week!!
