Feng Shui in the Home

Promoters of Feng Shui in the home believe that air, light, earth and water all carry vital energy which in turn can increase our own personal energy. This page will examine how the internal design and decorations can attract the correct energies, and diminish the negative ones so peace and harmony will reign in the home.

We all seek health for our bodies, peace for our minds and harmony in our homes and living environments. Our chosen house and home is a reflection of our wants and aspirations. Most people would want a living area receiving good daylight, a view of some greenery, a safe environment and will wish to live away from the polluted and noisy streets. What they want is a home that is attractive and comfortable to live in. Sometimes our wants and needs cannot be matched so we have to create our own small and ideal environments by using feng shui in the home.

Scents and Plants for Feng Shui in the Home

As soon as you enter the door of a house, the aroma that greets you gives the first impression of the kind of home it is. Air pollution from paints, furnishing, floors, carpets and also artificial fresheners and aerosols are not only unpleasant but can also be toxic and damaging. Natural aromatherapy oils extracted from plants, roots and seeds can be used to aid relaxation and calm nervous stresses.
Plants, cut flowers, water and even artificial flowers bring their own invigorating energies into a house.

Plants can provide a balanced flow of chi energy. It is advisable not to place spiky plants near a seating area but pointed leaves with strong upward growth will stimulated the chi getting stuck in dark corners. Large floppy leaves create a soothing energy whilst a red cyclamen will create more passion in your life. Trailing ivy can be draped over sharp furniture corners to soften the sharp edges which will encourage the chi energies to keep flowing around the corners. Plants can be used in a multitude of ways complimenting each other and balancing the yin and yang energies.

Feng Shui in the Home
Natural and Artificial Light and Lamps

The natural variations of day and moonlight help to keep us stimulated, balanced and alert so these need to be used to their maximum effect. For example, it is lovely to wake up and enjoy breakfast with the morning light and to catch the soothing twilight in the evening room. The sun’s and moon’s movement through the sky alters the flow of energy passing through your home. Natural light is ideal but nevertheless artificial lights and lamps do mimic the sun, bringing the active fire (yang) energy into the house. Also when artificial light is diffused or reflected, it mimics the natural defused sky light bringing to the home the gentle(yin) energies.

Choosing fabrics and fibres
for promoting favourable Yin and Yang energies.

The materials, you use to decorate and furnish your home affect the chi energy. Generally hard, flat shiny surfaces encourage the active or yang energies, whilst soft, mat-textured surfaces encourage passive, gentle (yin) energies. Not only is it important to choose fabrics with care, different colours will also influence different moods.
In order to gain the most positive of energies, it is important to choose the right colour, shape and texture for the article and to position every piece of furniture in the most beneficial location and direction.

Feng Shui in the Home
The placement of furniture

Chairs, sofas and tables with rounded shapes are fortuitous and should be arranged for ease of conversation. To promote relaxation and comfort, choose soft yin textures in green, cream or pale purple colors. The host’s chair should be in a safe position, facing, but not directly opposite the entrance to the room.
