HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST ENERGY EFFICIENT REFRIGERATOR
energy efficient refrigerator
One of the most important considerations to think about when you are choosing an energy efficient refrigerator is its location within the home.
Avoid placing your refrigerator next to a cooker, boiler, washing machine, direct sunlight or alongside t any other heat source. Refrigerators need to have adequate ventilation and are only designed to operate between certain external recommended temperatures, so before considering placing any energy efficient appliance into a garage or utility room, check the manufacturer’s guarantee.
Size of energy efficient fridge
Make sure you choose the right fridge to suit your needs.
- One large fridge is more economical than two smaller ones.
- A 284-litre capacity appliance with an A rating will use 20% more energy than a 210-litre A rated fridge.
- A top-bottom fridge rather than a side-by-side one, uses 10% less energy.
IDEAL TEMPERATURE OF THE REFRIGERATOR
Most fridges offer a temperature of 0°C to 7°C and the most effective temperature for short time food storage is between 3°C-5°C. If food is stored at a higher temperature, it may become damaged and could cause a health risk.
EU Energy labels
EU Energy labels for refrigerators, grades energy efficiency from A to G, (A being the most efficient) and gives the estimated annual energy consumption, the net storage volume(s) and information about the cooling service.
MEPS to refer to federal mandatory minimum efficiency performance standard (the US “standard”, the Mexican “norma”).
Do check for mandatory or voluntary refrigerator labelling as all countries have their own rules for rating appliance efficiency standards.
WAYS TO SAVE ENERGY WHEN USING YOUR REFRIGERATOR
- Keep your refrigerator doors closed as much as possible.
- Keep the coils on the back (or sometimes on the bottom) cleared of dirt and dust.
- Using a fridge thermometer, check the temperature. Keep it between 3°-5°C.
- Keep the fridge defrosted.
- Do not overcrowd your fridge. Air inside a fridge has to circulate to allow energy efficiency.
- Cover food. Moisture in the air inside a fridge makes the compressor work harder.
