HOW TO REMOVE EGG STAINS
Before attempting any treatments for egg stains removal from clothes, carpet or upholstery, please read the following advice.
Always read the washing/cleaning instructions on the fabric label.
Remember to test any treatment on a small hidden section of the material.
If in any doubt, seek independent professional advice.
- Detergents with strong colours will stain lightly coloured clothes.
- Check the colour fastness and dye stability of the fabric before treatments.
- Avoid using enzyme-based detergents and stain removers on wool and silk fabrics.
- Never put a stained article into a hot wash or use hot dryer on it, as the stain will set, making it extremely difficult to remove later.
- When treating stains, always start on the outer edges and work towards the centre.
The sooner you treat the stain, the easier it will come out.
Removing Egg Stains from Dry-Clean only Fabrics
If the garment is made from dry-clean-only fabric, just blot off the surplus egg and take the garment to the dry cleaners immediately. Any home treatments may make it impossible for the dry cleaning to be effective.
How to Remove Eggs Stains from Washable Fabrics
- Scrape or brush off any crusted matter.
- Rub in some mild liquid laundry detergent.
- Soak the garment with the added detergent for ½ hr in cool water to loosen the stain.
- Hold the stain under a running cold water tap to force the egg stain out of the fibres. If necessary rub in a bit more detergent and hold the garment under the tap again.
- Once the stain is out, rinse well and launder the garment as usual.
How to Remove Stains from Runny or Cooked Egg from Fabrics
- Blot up as much of the raw liquid egg stain as possible using a soft, absorbent cloth.
OR
- Using a blunt knife or palette knife, remove as much of the solid part of the egg as possible.
TREATMENT FOR BOTH RUNNY OR COOKED EGG STAINS
- Using a tissue or absorbent cloth and carefully dabbing, remove as much of the liquid egg as possible.
- Place an absorbent pad behind the stain and sponge the stain with cool water.
- If the garment is removable, allow the cool water to flow over or through the stain or, if necessary, soak it for up to ½ hr. This will loosen the egg debris from the fibres.
- If necessary, use a little laundry detergent and rub it into the stain. Agitate the area until the stain has vanished.
- Rinse the clothing well and add it to the next appropriate washing cycle.
How to Remove Stains made by Raw, Runny or Cooked Egg from Carperts or Upholstery
- Check in a hidden area for colour fastness. If in doubt have a professional carpet or upholstery cleaner to do the job.
- Where possible, place and absorbent pad under the material.
- Scrape OR brush off any crusted matter or using a butter / palette knife remove as much of the solid part of the egg as possible.
- Then blot up as much of the raw liquid egg stain as possible using a soft, absorbent cloth.
- Mix one teaspoon of a mild laundry detergent with a cup of cool water. Using this mix, but avoiding making the area wetter than necessary, dab and blot the stain to get the worst of it out.
- Mix one tablespoon of household ammonia with a half cup of water. Pour some of this mixture into a spray bottle. Spray and blot the stained area again being careful to keep it from getting too wet.
- Using a spray bottle, rinse the area with cool tap water then blot to remove excess moisture.
- Place a dry towel over the area and step on the towel thus drawing any excess water into the towel. Repeat until the towel remains dry.
