It is said that, there are at least 3 common spiders enjoying our hospitality in every room of the house no matter how tidy and clean it is kept. Oh dear! I find this difficult to believe and still hope that by decluttering, organizing and cleaning our homes diligently, spiders and other household pests can be kept to a minimum.
Spiders have 8 legs and two body parts and most spin webs. In the UK, there are about 30 different kinds of spider but the commmon spiders are,
House Spiders
These household pests are responsible for the untidy webs hanging from the ceilings and corners of the room.

The Ciniflo Similis spiders happily living in our sheds and cellars.
Spiders can be thought as beneficial pests but sadly they often cause panic and revulsion amongst many of us.
In the UK, it is possible but unlikely that anyone will come across a biting spider but in Australia, the Americas and the Tropics, certain poisonous spiders do come into houses and cause nasty bites and the control of these unwelcome spidery pests is a necessity.

They help recycle dead trees and animals back to the earth
Daddy longlegs, or harvestmen, are relatives of true spiders and kill and eat other spiders.

Control Methods for these Household Pests
To keep spiders out of your home, fill up any cracks in your house walls, especially around the foundation areas and repair any crevices around the door and the window frames.
Remove piles of leaves and any rubbish that has blown up against the house walls. These provide good homes for spiders.
If you see spiders sunning themselves high up on the house walls, spray them with water from the garden hose.
To remove a spider from the house without killing it,
Get a glass, invert it and place it over the spider.
Slide a piece of card under the glass holding the spider.
Take the glass+spider+cardboard outside and release the spider away from the house.
It is possible to purchase gadgets called humane spider catchers!
To Kill Spiders
Use your vacuum to suck them up. Empty the dust bag away from the house.
Most hardware shops will sell insecticidal sprays to kill spiders.
Always read the instructions on the spray can and take special precautions to protect children and make sure all food is covered.
