CLEANING BRASS
house cleaning
Cleaning brass was often a regular, quite pleasant job when not so long ago, people collected little brass figurines. Sadly we rarely see this sort of collection on the mantelpiece or in a display cabinet anymore.
Brass has now become quite expensive so it is no longer such a popular material for use around the home. Gone are the days when most families had maids or servants whose job it was to clean the brass every week or two.
- Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc and as we all know, brass, when left unprotected, becomes tarnished very quickly.
- Some people love to see this brown patina as it reminds them of the olden days or it makes the article look antique!
- Before the advent of gripper rods, brass stair rods held the carpet in place, door knobs were frequently made of brass and it was also the furniture on the front door of the well to do folk.
Polishing brass furniture, that has be exposed to the elements and allowed to get tarnished, can be quite hard work.
Natural Cleaning Recipes for Tarnished Brass
If your piece of brass is dirty, first wash it in some soapy water.
If your brass item is fixed to your door then make a template to fit around the door knob, letter box or door knocker to minimize any possible damage to the paint-work, whilst you are cleaning the brass. Maybe you could even use masking tape but if you bother to make a template you will be able to use it every time you do the cleaning.
A traditional way of cleaning brass is to cut a lemon in half and sprinkle some salt onto the surface of the lemon. Rub the brass item with this salty lemon.
An easier way is to polish brass is to add one tablespoon of white vinegar and one level tablespoon of salt to half a pint of hot water. Using a cloth and muscle power use this solution to clean the article.
After cleaning the brass as above, rinse the articles and dry them either with a soft cloth or maybe a hair dryer.
To keep the shine on the brass article for longer, finish your polishing job by rubbing some car polish onto the item!
If these natural cleaning methods do not produce the shine that you want, try the good old standby Brasso, although there are now many other similar brass cleaning products on the market.
