These household pests are a rarity in many countries but bed bugs can still present themselves in old and poor housing, overcrowded hostels and sometimes holiday camps.

• These flat, brown, rounded bothersome insects measuring about 5mm in length may live behind peeling wall-paper and wall hung pictures, in headboards, mattresses or wooden bed-frames and arrive on their human hosts at night to suck blood!
• These bite wounds produce a hard white swelling, resulting in a severe itch.
• These troublesome pests can wander from room to room and house to house along service ducts, holes or cracks in walls.
• Clothing, hung up against a wall where the bugs are living behind the wallpaper, can become infested and carry bugs to new habitats.

• In the UK the local authority is empowered to disinfect premises infested by these nasty bugs and can also order the owner of the premises to disinfest at his/her own expense.
• If these biting pests have become a problem in your home, then a great declutter and organize session and a thorough cleaning of every nook and cranny in the house must take place immediately.
• There are some types of sprays and insecticide powders available to the homeowner but frequently a fumigation contractor needs to be hired to fumigate all the rooms, furniture, clothes and bedding in the house.

STORE ALL PEST CONTROL CHEMICALS WHERE CHILDREN CANNOT POSSIBLY REACH THEM.

• The local authority in your area will advise you who to approach and how best to get rid of a persistent problem
• Once these creatures, their eggs and the nymph stage bugs have been eradicated, make sure that the structure of the house, the furniture and the decorations are kept in very good condition and that the rooms are regularly and thoroughly cleaned.
  
• Keep an eye out for any small beginnings of re-infestation and address any bug problem immediately before it can become out of control.
