BED BUGS Can they Kill You?
Bed Bugs Can they kill you ?
Throughout the world there has been a noted increase in Bed Bug populations and infestations.
These bugs are small, crawling parasitic insects that feed on the blood of humans. They inject tiny amounts of both blood thinning and anaesthetic agents into their victim before they take their feed.
They usually come out to feed on human blood in the early hours, before dawn. Each bug feeds about once a week but they can survive for up to six months without a meal.
Bed Bugs are found in all sorts of places, commonly in mattresses, cracks in furniture, behind skirting boards, in wall spaces, under peeling paint and in all sorts of nooks and crevices.
Here is the good news
Several studies conducted in the United States, the UK and elsewhere, have found that although bed bugs can carry some serious diseases, including HIV, St. Louis encephalitis and Hepatitis B, research so far suggests that Bed Bug diseases are not transmitted to humans.
So we can now say that Bed Bugs are not known to kill humans directly.
But we are still left with the vexed question
Could Bed Bugs kill you Indirectly?
Some people get little reaction from a bite, maybe just a little red lump.
In most cases, if the victim can resist scratching these bites, the swelling will reduce and disappear in about 7 days. Calamine lotion can be helpful to calm down a rash.
It is advised that the following victims of Bed Bugs should consult a medical doctor if :-
They have many bites, for example around 50 a day, and their health has been affected due to blood loss.
The irritation of the bites have led to eczema.
They have serious reactions to their Bed Bug bites. These victims may suffer sleepless nights due to the bites and may develop sore, itchy blotches and hard white, pus filled swellings.
Many of these unfortunate victims of this very small parasitic insect will need treatments and probably specific antibiotics to get rid of the invading bacteria.
A victim's health can also be affected by the huge distress, embarrassment and financial implications of the infestation.
