bed bug bite symptoms

Reports of Bed Bug infestations have increased hugely over the past few years.

These biting insects that are less than 1cm long, reddish in color, carrying reduced wings but flightless, are found in all sorts of environments. They can thrive in dirty homes and overcrowded homes, but unfortunately can also be found in clean homes. They can live in any area in the home but 80% of these bugs are usually found in or around the bed frame and mattress.

Where to find Bed Bugs

Infestations can appear very quickly as each female lays approximately 300 eggs in her lifetime.
The eggs will hatch in 10 days. The nymph stage to adulthood lasts takes another 6 weeks and then imating occurs and it all start again. Bed bugs live:

  • In tiny cracks, crevices and corners of furniture including the bed frames
  • On textiles and upholstered furniture
  • In beds including the seam and folds of mattress, box springs, bed frames
  • On curtains, edges of carpet
  • In cracks and tears in wallpaper and peeling paint
  • In spaces of wicker furniture and floor boards
  • amongst clutter

When do they Bite

Bedbugs usually hide in the daytime and feed at night, with their peak feeding times about one hour before dawn. They are attracted to body heat, carbon dioxide in exhaled breaths, vibration of the body, human sweat and odor.
These creatures are large enough to be visible, and where they have scurried around, dark specs of their waste can often be seen.

When bedbugs leave their hiding places they enjoy piercing into and feeding on the blood taken from exposed skin areas such as the neck, arms, legs and shoulders.

The sizes of the red bumps often vary depending on the reaction and sensitivity of the host.

These bites often appear in patterns, sometimes in rows but they can also appear in groups.
Initially, after being bitten the bite will not itch. Before feeding, the clever bug, injects some analgestic type fluid so it can feed undisturbed! Once the redness, swelling and itching begins, the area will be uncomfortable for a number of days.

Treatment for Bed Bug Bite Symptoms

  • To lessen the itch, apply calamine lotion or an appropriate anti-histamine spray or cream.
  • Try not to scratch these bites as this may lead to a secondary infection requiring antibiotics to clear the rash.
  • If there is any unusual reaction to the bed bug bites, do seek professional advice.

Pest Control for Bed Bugs

  • Regular inspection and cleaning of all the areas where these insects make there home.
  • Insecticidal treatment of bedding and furniture may be necessary. Do follow all instructions carefully as prolonged exposure to toxic materials while sleeping is most unhealthy.
  • Professionals who deal in Pest Control for Bed Bugs have the experience and understanding of all infestation problems and will perform a thorough job. They will also be able to advise on how to avoid similar problems in the future.
