Black Ant Identification.
household pests
These insects are fascinating to watch. The little black bugs measuring around 3mm are not known to transmit disease but can become
household pests
causing nuisance and anxiety. Simply, they are just not nice to have crawling around the larder and kitchen cupboards!
These busy bugs like to visit houses mostly in the warmer months of the year when they forage and gather food stuffs for the young larvae, who have just hatched out of their eggs.
Not only do these bugs feast on jam, sugar and all things sweet, they also ‘milk’ and collect honey dew secretions from plant aphids and gather small dead insects.
In the UK, in the summertime and on one or two days of the year when the air temperature and the breezes are just perfect for them, mature, winged males and females emerge from their nests for their mating flights. The air can seem filled with these flying insects but sadly for these creatures, the male dies after mating and the female bites off its own wings and burrows underground until it starts laying eggs the following year.

Ant Identification and the Control of Ants
STORE ALL PEST CONTROL CHEMICALS WHERE CHILDREN CANNOT POSSIBLY REACH THEM.
Make sure that you
clean out the larder
thoroughly and check for any sweet tasting spills or smears.
To control these busy crawling bugs, you need to find their nests. Clues, consisting of little piles of earth or powdered concrete can be found, often adjacent to paving stone gaps or fence posts. Look to see if there are and holes where ants are entering or departing. Follow them as they bring their treasures back to the nest.
Boiling water poured over or into the nest and onto marching columns will get rid of some of them.
There are many powders and aerosols available at hardware stores that will deter and kill marauding bugs. There is also jelly-like feed called Nippon to which they are attracted to. They will gather this poisoned jelly and take it back to the nest and feed it to the larvae and their Queen. This method usually destroys the colony.
These household pests will disappear from the house as soon as the weather turns cold.
