underbed storage - underbed storage boxes - underbed storage drawers - underbed storage bags - underbed storage systems
Underbed storage systems use the what might have been a wasted and dust collecting space and make it into a large and potential useful storage space.
Here we have a number of different styles and sizes of this type of storage furniture, some especially for under children's beds and others for under adult's beds.
Under Bed Storage for a Child's Bed
Cabin Beds Mid Sleeper
If the bed is for a child then consider a bed with underbed storage. These beds come in three heights:-
- A CABIN BED around 60-70 cms high usually has storage space for six drawers,
- A MID-SLEEPER 110-120cm high, can provide drawers, shelves and maybe a pullout desk.
- A HIGH SLEEPER 150-190cm. May have a wardrobe and choice of shelves, drawers or a desk.
As a space saving design, this bed could be the answer to a storage problem, but for young children, who also like to play on the bed, safety could become an issue. This type of bed may also be unsuitable for parents who wish to make the bed or to sit on it for the bedtime story.
Under the Bed Storage for an Adult sized Bed
Some solid frame beds come with customized drawers whilst most divan beds have fitted underbed storage drawers or, sliding doors giving entry to the space. Drawers are usually fitted to the sides of the bed but can also come out from the foot end. Some manufactures make narrower drawers at the top end of the bed, making room for the positioning of a bed-table.
There are divans with lift-up frames! Using a mechanism enabling an easy lift, the end of the bed is raised revealing the useful storage space. The mechanism can be locked shut making it a hidden place for special items!
Free Standing Under the bed Storage
Firstly measure the height between the bed and the floor. Usually the gap is about 6in (15cm).If you decide to extend the gap by raising the bed, it is possible to buy adjustable bed raisers for single and double beds.
Zip up Bags made with Natural fibres
Natural fibres, canvas, cotton and Neotex bags are washable and will allow good ventilation of stored articles. If you have a bedroom carpet, do make sure that the bags have rigid sides otherwise it may be difficult to manoeuvre them.
Zip Up Plastic Bags,(Clear or coloured)
These plastic are wipe-clean and come as Zip Bags, Vacuum Bags or Compression Bags. Again, make sure they have handles.
- Zipped bags may come in various colours but usually have a transparent lids. Some have compartments for shoes and some have rigid sides and handles.
- Vacuum bags are made of stronger plastic and require a vacuum cleaner to suck the air out. The sealing, locks out moths, moisture, odour and dust.
- Compression bags are also made of strong plastic. To expel the air, no vacuum cleaner is required, instead the bag must be tightly rolled. This system takes out most of the air, but for long term storage a vacuum bag is recommended.
Drawers
Drawers can be made of all sorts of materials and come with castors, knobs, wheels or sliders:-
Drawers may be made in different types of solid wood or hardboard, or just wooden frames with material linings. It is possible to use your old furniture drawers for under bed storage use. Castors can be bought from most hardware stores!
Trolleys
Trolleys are usually made in chrome and have wheels or castors but no lid. Some incorporate compartments for shoes or suchlike.
Clear or Opaque Plastic Boxes
Boxes come with or without sliders or castors, with no lids, full lids or hinged half lids. They come with or without handles and some are stackable. Parents have commented that when these under bed storage boxes are no longer needed, they are very useful lidded sandboxes!!
Bedside Caddy
This caddy holds small items and hangs from the side of the bed being fixed between the mattress and the frame.
